The Third Khatwa Forum
The Happy Homes Association for Culture and Development concluded the Third “Khatwa” Forum for University Major Selection on Sunday, June 24, 2018. The forum targeted secondary school students in general, with a particular focus on General Secondary Education (Tawjihi) students. It aimed to help students identify suitable university majors and academic and career paths.
This year’s forum featured seven speakers from different fields who shared their experiences and advice to help young men and women choose university majors according to their abilities and explore future opportunities in light of the needs of the labor market. Local universities in Hebron also participated in the forum to introduce students to the available study options.
The forum attracted a large number of secondary school students, with its sessions focusing on topics such as identifying an appropriate academic direction based on students’ abilities and exploring opportunities for gaining practical experience relevant to the labor market while pursuing university studies. The forum was supported and funded by the Youth Leadership Enterprise in Malaysia.
The forum was inaugurated by the President of the Happy Homes Association for Culture and Development, Ms. Suhair Hassouna, who welcomed the guests and students and explained that the forum is part of the Association’s strategy to help build a conscious generation capable of facing future challenges. She also spoke about upcoming awareness programs focusing on young couples and parenting. This was followed by remarks from representatives of the participating universities—Palestine Polytechnic University, Hebron University, and Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie, Al-Arroub Branch—who introduced the main majors and programs offered by their institutions.
The forum featured several sessions designed to provide students with practical tools to help them choose their university majors. Ms. Asmaa Al-Sharbati, an academic and trainer specializing in study skills, addressed this topic. A number of speakers also shared their experiences and advice to help young men and women choose their university majors and determine suitable career paths. Among them was Sama Aqneibi, founder of Malameh Studio for children’s photography and supplies, who spoke about the importance of applying one’s abilities and skills to work they are passionate about. Eng. Hassan Omar, a member of the Higher Council for Creativity and Excellence, also spoke about the skills required of an entrepreneurial student.
The forum also included an open discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of studying locally versus abroad, featuring Dr. Wael Hareez, a researcher at Barq Center for Studies and Research; Ms. Ishar Al-Natsheh, a researcher participating in the Palestinian Neuroscience Initiative at Al-Quds University; and Mr. Mazen Al-Zaro, a lawyer and debate trainer in Palestine.
The forum concluded with a session by Mr. Bilal Shalash, Research Fellow at the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies and founder of the Wathaq Palestine initiative, who discussed the obstacles and challenges that university students may encounter during their academic journey.
